Dyslexia Treatments

There is no “cure” for dyslexia and dyslectics learn to live and function normally with dyslexia. But a person can benefit from specialized support, the earlier in life the person is treated the better. Popular and successful treatments are:

- Having One-to-one tutoring from a Dyslexia specialist educator.
- Dyslexia computer software programs
- Phonics-based reading programs that teaches the connection between spoken and written sounds.
- Multi-sensory approaches to learning, approaches which uses as many different senses as possible such as seeing, listening, doing and speaking.
- Setting up arrangements with the child’s school, e.g. for the child to take oral instead of written tests.
- Learning via audiotape or videotape.


Where to get help

Dyslexia or SLD can be hard to diagnose unless the problem is severe. Always seek professional advice from a specialist educational psychologist if you think you or your child may have dyslexia.

You can seek advice from you doctor, a specialist educational psychologist, your child’s school and from a speech pathologist. Arrange for a dyslexia evaluation. The evaluation may include testing a range of factors including:


- Cognitive (thinking) skills
- Memory
- Vocabulary
- Literacy skills
- Intellectual ability
- Information processing
- Psycholinguistic processing.
- An evaluation by a speech pathologist may also assist.
